David McCullough: The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal 1870-1914
Back when I was in high school, this book introduced me to the Victorians, engineering on a massive scale, Theodore Roosevelt, Ferdinand de Lesseps and industrial archaeology... It must have been a great book to penetrate the skull of a surfer nerd who was chasing girls... Re-reading it after an 8 year hiatus.
