In the "It just ain't so category" are a few surprises from the brain research people (many thanks to LiveScience.com) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Did you know - that we use all of our brain not just 10%, even when sleeping?
We also can grow new brain cells as adults, just not as fast as before beer.
So let's get this straight, we are growing new brains, and we are using all of the cells we have. I don't know wether to be glad or sad. It was a great device in sci-fi to have a character access 100% of the brain's power and come up with some fantastic abilities like telekenisis or deflecting energy weapons (many thanks to the SciFi Channel's Eureka writers). It was kind of fun to imagine that there was the potential to use 10 times more brainpower. But on the other hand, it is sort of a relief that we are all maxed out in terms of dealing with the everday load of modern life.
I like to believe that I have exactly the right amount of wetware to deal with loading DVD's for my two year old, or getting through the morning commute in a car smaller than the Army's robotic tanks. I think it would be a great idea if cars had "Sorry" Lights - just so you could communicate to the other drivers that you did not intend to cut them off just as they were merging onto the interstate because you were making cute faces with the kid in the back.
Hey - how about an indicator light for Blog posts? - To tell readers how much of our brain was fully engaged on the blog they are kindly reading. Sort of a level set to warn of scatological writing down the page. Think about it and let me know what you like - but don't think too hard - you need all the brainpower you have.
